When believers struggle with feelings of unworthiness, they have a tendency to not receive everything God has for them. Some have difficulty accepting they are greatly loved; therefore, they have difficulty receiving love. They feel they do not deserve God’s love, nor anyone else’s’ for that matter. Furthermore, unworthiness causes believers to reject love from others because they “cannot” (will not in some cases) trust the love displayed toward them is genuine. They simply do not trust God and people enough to let their guard down.
Here are some things to consider, especially for those of you who struggle with unworthiness. If you were not important to God, you would not exist. If He did not love you, Jesus would have never died and resurrected for you. You could not love God, because He did not love you first (see 1John 4:19). If He did not want you to receive love, He would not have offered it to you to begin with. If He did not want other people in your life to love you, He would not have placed them there. In His Kingdom, these sorts of “ifs” do not exist.
Christianity 101 teaches us that we are righteous in Christ Jesus, which means we are no longer sinners in God’s sight (see 2Corinthians 5:21). The problem for some lies with their belief system. Ephesians 2:8 tells us, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (KJV). We are no longer sinners saved by grace as some people mistakenly say. Once we come into that grace, receiving the righteousness in Christ, we are no longer considered sinners by God. Unless you have trampled the Blood of Jesus under your feet, you are utterly His. You are sons and daughters of the Most High. Outside are the sinners, which means that if your are still a sinner, you are not His. Remember Romans 8:14-17, which says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together” (KJV). As long as believers view their selves as sinners, they will never feel worthy; much less, deserving of the good things that the Father lavishes on His children.
It is high time that believers believe God’s Word. We need to properly receive His love, and count those He places in our lives as gifts from the Father. He only gives good gifts, and He gives them to those He loves (see James 1:17). Our God is not a dysfunctional Father. That means you can trust His love for you. It will always be there because He made us worthy. Why? Because He does love you!
