One of the best ways to pray the will of God is to pray from the Word itself. When we pray the prayers written in Scripture, it is important to listen to the Spirit as we do because some prayers are for specific times and seasons. In this way, they have to be limited to the times and seasons that God intended. Some prayers had cursing involved with them; however, our prayers in this season are to be void of cursing. We are the children of the Day and not the night; therefore, our prayers are limited to blessing. Using Psalm 109 as an example, there words of judgment prayed for a specific group, which included Judas. As the children of God, we are instructed to bless and curse not. We are called upon to pray for our enemies, not against them (see Matthew 5:43-48; Luke 6:27-28; Romans 12:14-21). We cannot utter prayers of cursing and expect God to be pleased with our prayers. The prayers that please God, bless others, and bring reconciliation between those who are lost and the Father. Remember, God is not willing that any should perish, but all should come to repentance (see 2 Peter 3:9).
Those prone to cursing or vengeance in their prayers may be harboring un-forgiveness and bitterness in their heart. Obviously, they need to forgive and let go of the bitterness. For us, as we pray, we may also see what is in our own heart. It may reveal who is the Lord in our heart. It is important to come before the Lord and ask Him to show us what we do not see. If we need to repent, we repent and move on. When we pray according to the will of the Father, we will not pray according to the flesh, or through a lust. We cannot use verses of the Bible to fulfill lusts of the flesh, and call it the will of God. Just as we are to seek to conform our theology to the Word of God, we should also seek to conform our prayers to the Word as well, versus bending verses of Scripture to conform to fanciful desires. Unfortunately, people try to manipulate God by using verses of Scripture out of context to get what they want, regardless of the will of the Father. Keep in mind that God is not stupid.
Consider James 4:2-6:”Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” (KJV). This leads to one final thought: in order to reach generations to come, we must humble ourselves, and pray, “Thy will be done.”
