I Need Distractions

How many would say, “I always have to be doing something. If I sit still too long, I have to find some form of distraction. Otherwise, I feel anxious, or uneasy.” Perhaps, now would be a good time to do a self-inventory by asking the Holy Spirit to show you why you can’t sit still. In some cases, people have need of a healing, but are unaware of it. The inability to be at rest is one sign. “I feel fine, it’s just the way I’m wired.” Are you sure?
   Try this on for size. Get alone, sit quietly for at least ten minutes with no distractions. No phone, music, television, alcohol, or CBD for that matter. Just you and a quiet room. No one else. In the process, put away your “mental things to do list.” This would be a great time to focus on God, and listen for His voice. See what comes up. By the way, distractions may also be an indication one is avoiding God, because one wants to do his or her own thing. Call it obedience-avoidance if you like. At least, in some cases.

Other Signs

There other signs a person has unresolved issues. Keep in mind, everyone experiences some form of trauma or another. Each to varying degrees. It is important to avoid comparisons. Some believe, since they did not go through something as horrendous as another person, their experience does not count. It’s not worth considering. If something is interfering with your life, it is big enough. There will always be someone who has gone through something worse than us. Of course, that may help keep you from feeling sorry for yourself.
   Here are few clues to consider. One is unexplained emotions, or behavior. For instance, feeling resentment, or even anger toward someone you meet for the first time. Does it make sense to feel such emotions when you’ve never interacted with that person before? It may be the individual reminds you of someone who did you wrong, and you haven’t forgiven him, or her.
   Sudden unexplained bursts of anger in certain circumstances. It could be something as simple as blowing up over spilled milk. In this example, someone may have had a volatile parent who exploded when he spilled milk at the table as a young child. The sudden wrath caused fear, which is traumatic to a toddler. That trauma was stored in the body, and under certain circumstances, it comes out in anger. It may surface as unexplained anxiety. It’s why some react to certain situations just the parent did; even though, they swore they would never treat their child the same way.
   Another indication is sudden fear, or timidity. Under the wrong circumstances, even the toughest of the tough can be reduced to feeling like an insecure child. The confident, decisive individual can freeze when situations mimic something in the past. Unexplained anxiety keeps people from moving forward, to include trying new things. They are stuck in risk-avoidance mode. Some had to live up to unrealistic expectations, and were constantly reminded of their failing to fulfill those expectations. The fear of failure keeps them from doing things which they are capable.
   These are just few examples to get the ball rolling. Again, ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you need to see.

Embrace the Healing

Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.
   The Lord never intended for us to carry such heavy loads. Those loads interfere with us being conformed to His image. Sometimes they keep us from being that kind person we’ve always wanted to be. They interfere with relationships. How many are imprisoned emotionally? God does not want that for us.
   Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised (oppressed), To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
   Allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you. Let Him bring you the clarity, and wisdom you require to release, and forgive. Give up the addiction to stress. Allow yourself to be loved by Him, and in so doing, you will be able to love others well. Our Lord is worthy of your healing!
   Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely, He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

The Things of God are Spiritually Discerned

There some things that cannot be fast-tracked. One of those things is an intimate relationship with God. To know Him, His heart, will and word requires spending time with Him. It requires the Holy Spirit. He is our Teacher (see John 15:26).
   1 Corinthians 2:11-4 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit Who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised (discerned) (NASB).

The Heart of God cannot be Found in AI

The heart of God cannot be found in AI! What AI knows is learned from man (machine learning); not God. The thoughts found in it are predominately from the spirit of man. To be clear, the Holy Spirit can use AI to teach us things if He desires to use it. For example, He may have someone use it for quick references (i.e., Scripture references, word definitions, geography and so on). Of course, there are some Spirit-led individuals who may have given it input.
   Here are some questions to ask. How pure is the information as it pertains to spiritual matters? Has it been corrupted? How benevolent are the programmers, and how favorable are they towards Christianity? For those of you who have used some form of AI, have you found any errors in any information it provided?
   To be fair, God has given man the ingenuity to create various technologies. Many of which are highly beneficial. So, this is not intended to dump on AI, but to bring an awareness that technology can only go so far. We cannot afford to put our trust in it, regardless of how well it serves us. Remember, the things of this world are temporal; but God is eternal. Thus, we must keep our faith squarely in Him, especially if we want to have true stability.

Where are You Getting Your Messages?

For those who teach the Word of God, what is your source? Have you used AI to write your lessons, or messages? If so, why? Using it is not the same as being Spirit-led. By using it in such fashion, would it be possible to miss the heart of God? If you become reliant on it instead of the Holy Spirit, you run the risk of missing God entirely. Sure, it can write something quickly, and that can seem very helpful if you’re crunched for time.
   The intention here is not add to one’s workload as it were; on the contrary. The idea is to be connected to the heart of God. That being said, Scripture does talk about being diligent. It’s a labor of love. Bottom line, let Holy Spirit lead you in whatever you do. If He says use AI, great. If not, maybe reconsider. The last thing any of us should want to do is corrupt the Word of God.
   2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.

Here’s a question for you dads: How do you want your children (child) to view God the Father? The reason for the question is children are greatly influenced in the way they see Him by their earthly fathers. More pointedly, you.

Do Your Children Know Unconditional Love?

Do your children have to earn your love and affection? Do they have to live up to some sort of standard? If so, can you live up to it? Or, do you love them unconditionally, and you make sure they know it? Perhaps, it’s somewhere in between. If a child has to earn a father’s love, he or she will tend feel unworthy to receive the love of God. Conversely, if they know they’re unconditionally loved regardless of their conduct, they will be more apt to freely receive His love.

How do You Nurture?

Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
   It is interesting to note this verse does not say, “mothers, provoke not.” Neither does it say, “parents, provoke not. This is aimed at fathers. Provoke (Strong’s Concordance Number: 3949) in the Greek, is a compound word. To anger alongside, i.e. enrage. It is also rendered as “anger.” To provoke to anger, irritation, or resentment. This type of anger is not a quick burst, then it’s finished; rather, it has a long slow burn. In severe cases, it can lead to revenge. This is the one that can lead to deep, long-term resentment.
   The NASB renders it this way: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” The call is to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. How one does this very thing can have long-term consequences -good or bad.
   Colossians 3:21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. NASB: Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.
This passage of Scripture is similar, but has another meaning attached to it. In this case, provoke means to stimulate, stir or excite to anger. It can go as far as to rouse to fight (Strong’s Concordance Number: 2042).    Unfortunately, in some instances, fathers and sons have gone to blows.  
   There are a variety of ways to provoke your children. Even in the way you “bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” can turn them away from God. There is such a thing as being too strict, and overbearing, which has been known to lead children to rebel against their parents, and ultimately against God. Obviously, not being firm enough can also lead to rebellion.
   God always disciplines us for our good (see Hebrews 6:5-11). He’s measured. He is our Example. There is a difference between being firm, and harsh. Just as there is difference between punishment out of anger, and measured discipline out of love. One strikes out of anger, with no real thought to the end result. This can lead to a broken spirit. It also leads to an angry adult who doesn’t cope very well.
   If harshness, and anger is the norm, a child will tend to see God the Father as someone who is always angry with him or her. He becomes a tyrant in his or her view. Couple this with guilt, shame and condemnation, and you will find someone who both blames God for everything wrong, and feels unworthy to approach Him. Such children become bitter, and turn away from Him. Obviously, it is not exactly conducive to a healthy relationship between the father and the child.
   If disappointment is used like a weapon, children will feel as if they can never do anything right. Some carry that into adulthood. Moreover, they tend feel like a disappointment to God.
If you are kind, gentle, but firm when need be, they are apt to view God as kind, gentle, and firm in loving manner. If you are present with them, they get a sense of importance. This makes it far easier for them to believe they are important in His sight.
   Dads are not perfect. There are no Parenting 101 courses available. Everyone blows it from time to time. In those moments, own it. Admit it, and ask them to forgive you. Obviously, go to God, but to don’t forget to learn from it, and forgive yourself should you miss the mark. It is very meaningful to children when their dad repents, admits his wrong, and asks for their forgiveness. Generally, children are very forgiving, and resilient.
   The list of how dads may influence their children in various circumstances is longer than we have time to address here. Perhaps, the rule of thumb is to treat your children as God the Father would treat them, with the help of Holy Spirit. As the saying going, what children learn is more often caught than taught. By the grace of God, there go we!

Discipleship is Not About Personalities

1 Corinthians 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
   On surface, when reading this verse along with some other similar scriptures (1 Corinthians 4:16; Philippians 3:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:6, and so on), one might think Paul is saying to follow him, or others like him. Of course, he’s talking about following the example of those who follow Jesus. Learning from those who are Christ-like, because they actually do follow Him.
   It’s about discipleship, which is not about personalities. It’s about following Jesus Who lives in those who lead by example; not the individual, himself or herself. As a matter of fact, Paul warns us not to follow personalities, because it ultimately leads to division.
   1 Corinthians 1:10-13 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
   People were never meant to be placed on a pedestal, or elevated above proper honor, or respect. When someone elevates another to an unhealthy level, what that person says may carry more weight in his mind than what Jesus, Himself has said. He may be blind to possible contradictions to Scripture.  This can be a very dangerous thing indeed. That’s not to say the teacher has nefarious intentions. People are human, and can make mistakes.
   Denominations have sprung out of groups of people following someone who had an experience with God. Unfortunately, they created and followed traditions of men, instead of having their own experience. In some congregations, the culture has been built around the pastor, or leadership. Even to the point where some actually mimic their behavior, dress and speech patterns. Not exactly what the Holy Spirit intended when He had Paul write, “Be followers of me.”

It’s About Intimate Relationships with Jesus

Hebrews 6:10-12 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward His name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
   Everyone is supposed to have their own personal experience of faith, and patience. We were never meant to mimic someone to the point where we do exactly as they do. For example, “Paul gets up at 3:30 to pray, so I get up at 3:30 to pray.” Question, is this person Spirit-led, or Paul-led? That’s how a tradition is born. Faith is about obedience to God, which requires a personal relationship with Him.
   Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
   This verse did not say, “faith comes by hearing what Paul says, or does.” If a person feels led by Holy Spirit to get up at 3:30, great.
   Each of us are designed to have a unique relationship with God, which is one reason we have our own personalities. Biblical principles apply to all, but the relational qualities are personal. Each person’s walk is between God and the individual. Much of which is done in secret (see Matthew 6:1-7).
   If one disciples others, the idea is to point them to Jesus in order for them to have their own intimate relationship with Him. If you are being discipled, allow yourself to be led to Jesus in order to have your own intimate relationship with Him. We should encourage one another, but not mimic one another in an unhealthy way!

How do You Treat the Word of God?

Whose opinion do you value the most, God’s and man’s? Stop, and think about it before answering the question. It would be easy to say, “I value God’s opinion above man’s,” especially when you’re amongst other believers. However, it might be worth getting alone with your thoughts, and muse on it for a while. Think about who has the most influence in your life. How much does peer pressure affect you?
   For example, do you seek to conform to the Word of God in the way God intended, or do you seek to conform the Word of God to the opinion of man in order to fit the culture? How many try to twist Scripture in order to make it agree with their lifestyle. How many mishandle it, so can they compromise without feeling guilty. “It’s okay, we’re under grace,” for instance. It is important to stay open to the Holy Spirit’s conviction and correction. It’s better than having a guilty conscience, or worse, a seared one.
   1 Timothy 4:1-2 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.

Accountability

Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
   While it is true we are under grace, and have been saved from the wrath to come, we all will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ (see Romans 14:10). The type of works each of us did will be revealed in that day. They will be tested, or proven by fire. If our work stands, we have a reward. If it burns, we suffer loss; though we ourselves will be saved (see 1 Corinthians 3:9-14).
   It may prove beneficial to remind ourselves periodically how God views our preferences and our handling of His Word, even if it’s obvious. What doe Jesus have to say about esteeming man’s opinion over God’s?
   John 5:43-45 I am come in My Father’s name, and ye receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
   Placing man’s opinion about God’s may affect one’s belief level. The more you heed the opinion of others, the less apt you may believe His Word. For instance, have you ever found yourself questioning the validity of the Bible during conversations with those who seek refute it? Our flesh, tends to gravitate toward receiving the honor of man. We all want to be accepted. Being rejected by others can sting; however, it pales compared to being rejected by God.
   Matthew 10:32-33 Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny Me before men, Him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
   Trying to fit Scripture into the culture of the day bumps up against God’s unchanging nature. God does not change, which means His Word doesn’t either. It will never conform to culture that is contrary to His nature. Even though He is one, God is the Majority. The number of those who disagree with His Word has no relevance, whatsoever! He is not going to change for us, He said so!
    Malachi 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
   Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.
Ultimately, His Word prevails, therefore, it is far better to conform culture to it. People will actually be judged by the very Word they try to twist. What does God say about adding or taking away from it?
   Proverbs 30:5-6 Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him. Add thou not unto His words, lest He reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

The Word can be Uncomfortable

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
   Perhaps, one reason people seek to either change or avoid the Word is it can make them feel uncomfortable. No one loves feeling exposed; although, exposure provides opportunity for repentance. Therefore, it is better to be exposed now, because on the day of Judgment it will be too late for repentance. It is better to live in the Light than in darkness.
   John 2:19-21 This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God (NASB).

Don’t Assume the Worst

Here is something we all need to take to heart: just because we face difficulties, and find ourselves in times of hardship, it does not necessarily mean we are not walking by faith. Neither does it particularly mean we are in rebellion. Walking by faith does not preclude hardships; in fact, it can be quite the opposite. For example, there are the trials that accompany faith (see 1 Peter 1:6-9 for example).
   In some circles, people have been taught hardship, such as illness or financial difficulties are signs of lack of faith, or rebellion. There are no alternatives in their view. Some, go so far as to say God has struck them with such things, because He is angry with them. Just how biblical is that assumption? Not very! To be sure, there is Scripture that might point in that direction; however, without full context, one might assume the wrong things. That being said, it would be easy to falsely accuse others, or even yourself when things go wrong. “I must have sinned.” “I must lack faith.” “Am I somehow rebelling?”
   This is one reason it is important for people to study the Bible with the help of Holy Spirit for themselves. Hearsay is a dangerous way to live. Even those with the best of intentions don’t always get it right. We cannot afford to simply take people’s word for it. Anecdotally, I never expect anyone to take my word for anything. I want others to study to see if it be so. I certainly want to know if I overlooked something, or am in error.
   God is a loving Father Who does discipline His children; but never out of anger. He does so, because of His love. One of the ways He may discipline us is allow us to reap what we sow. That being said, there are times His mercy keeps us from reaping the very things we deserve. He knows exactly what we need, and when we need it. Therefore, do not assume you’ve blown it, if things get rough. Ask for wisdom.
   Hebrews 12:5-6 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening (discipline) of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him: For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth (disciplines), and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth (read verses 7-13). 

The Conviction of the Holy Spirit

As disciples of Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit lives in us. Therefore, if something is awry, He will convict us. If we keep an open heart, He will lead us to repentance. If you are not sure where you stand, ask Him. We do need to guard our hearts, and avoid assumptions. God’s goodness, and kindness leads us to repentance (see Romans 2:4). Pay attention to those pricks in the heart, and adjust accordingly.

When one is not Walking by Faith

Walking by faith involves hearing and obeying. In which case, God speaks to us in a way that gets our attention, we believe Him, receive and submit to His desire out of love. If He does not speak to us first, then faith is not involved. Action in itself is not necessarily wrong, or right for that matter. One exception would be thinking about doing something, and the Lord says, “Please don’t,” or “Stop!” If we stopped, we walked by faith. We obeyed.
   An important lesson to learn is knowing the difference between actual faith, and presumption, and assumption. Of course, the latter two are easy to do when learning how to walk by faith. Here’s one example of how it may happen: a person sees someone respond the Lord with positive results. In turn, he assumes the action now applies to himself, and thus, acts accordingly. Sometimes that can be a recipe for disaster, especially if it wasn’t sanctioned by God. Best to pray, then obey.
   Once in a while, one might hear, “I’m going to step out by faith, and do such and such.” If God did not say, “do such and such,” it’s not faith. First comes the hearing, then the action. While the Bible gives us examples of faith, which helps us verify the legitimacy of what we hear, the Holy Spirit still needs to lead us. For example, I cannot simply copy the action of a prominent figure in the Bible; unless, He says, “Do that.”
   Of course, there are some givens, such as praying, and making disciples. At the same time, the Holy Spirit should be involved there as well. That way, we know for what to specifically pray, or how to disciple another. Whether it’s Communion, or sharing about Jesus (etc.), let Him lead.

When it’s Rebellion

This should be fairly self-explanatory. In most cases, people know full well when they are rebelling against God. Deciding to do what you please, whether God approves or not, is step in that direction. When a person decides not to believe God; much less obey His word, he is in rebellion. It is an actual decision of the heart. There is no repentance involved. That’s not to say he is beyond repentance. Scripture gives some clarity on this issue. Stubbornness is a big deal!

You will have Tribulation

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
   We can expect trouble. That does not mean we should go looking for it. When difficulties come, seek Him, and ask for wisdom. Of course, it important to maintain a constant state of communion with God. That will save us all kinds of hardship. He will walk through it with us, and get us to the other side. We already have the victory in Jesus Christ!
   Take this to heart: hardship is NOT a sign God is angry with you! He loves you far more than you realize!

What is a Sacrifice of Praise?

Hebrews 13:15-16 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased (NASB).
   Is it a sacrifice to offer praise? We’ll approach this question on a couple different levels. The first one is defining what it means to offer up a sacrifice of praise. In short, praise is the sacrifice which we offer to God, which includes thanksgiving. It does not mean we offer praise as a form of sacrifice, especially when our emotions are not in alignment.
   In other words, this verse does not refer to praise feeling like a sacrifice in the moment, because our circumstances are difficult, and we don’t feel like praising Him. “I don’t feel like it, but I’ll do it anyway, bless God!” Ironically, when our souls are disquieted, and our flesh is fighting against, thanksgiving is the antidote to all the negativity. Gratitude beats grumpiness any time. Offer praise filled with thanksgiving, and your emotions will follow. Waiting on your emotions is a great way to stay stuck.
   One of the things praises do is declare the greatness of God, and the great things He has done. Our testimony is a form of praise, and keeps us in touch with gratitude. Again, it’s hard to feel grumpy when you’re filled with gratitude.

Praise Connects us with Trust

Psalms 42:5-6 Why art thou cast down (in despair), O my soul? and why art thou disquieted (disturbed) in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember Thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
   During trying times, we can feel consumed up by the circumstances surrounding us, and forget all the victories God has given us in the past. Our focus can be misdirected by the situation, especially if we have all of Job’s friends trying to encourage us. You know, the friends who try to encourage you with more negativity. Leaving you feeling worse than when they first arrived. That’s one reason it’s best to start with God, before talking with others.
   Praise realigns our focus, and brings to remembrance His greatness, and all He has done, which includes specific instances when He came to our rescue. For instance, when you consider the vastness of the universe, and the fact He created it. Moreover, it cannot contain Him. That kind of dwarfs everything else; and yet, He cares for you. It puts things into proper perspective.
   Psalms 8:4 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
   Praise reminds us that we already have the victory in Him. We are not trying to gain the victory. He is not limited to the number of times He will rescue us, or come to our aid. “If He did it once, He’ll do it again.” We simply trust Him with the circumstances, which includes the methods we may not understand. Sometimes things appear to get worse, before they get better. Trust Him with the results. In His sovereignty, He still works around the way people respond, or react, which is another lesson in itself. Thanksgiving reminds us He will never leave, nor forsake us. We have His Word on that!
   Hebrews 13:5-6 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave (desert) thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my Helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Praise Reveals the Posture of Your Heart

Praise, or the lack thereof, reveals the posture of your heart. An ungrateful human being is far less apt to praise God than the one with deep gratitude. If it is a sacrifice to praise Him, then it begs the question: what’s in your heart? This question is primarily aimed at those who seldom ever do; not those who might be experiencing hardship, and are off their game, so to speak.
   Of course, those who are wounded, and angry need healing for their souls. They may very well wrestle with praise, and thanksgiving. For those who may be in this boat, know that it speeds up healing, brings peace and clarity. Anecdotally, I can name numerous times when praise brought me out of the pit of despair. Actually, He brought me out as I offered the sacrifice of praise.
   Psalms 42:11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise Him, Who is the Health of my countenance, and my God.

So, You Want to be Perfect?

So, you want to be perfect? How’s that going for you? Unfortunately, many struggle with being a perfectionist. They want to be perfect at everything they do, or at least, appear to be so. Unfortunately, the more a person attempts to be perfect, the further away from perfection he or she becomes. Perfection is impossible with everyone; except One. His name is Yeshua, Jesus. He is the only Person on the planet Who was, and is perfect.
   Colossians 2:9-10 For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in Him, which is the Head of all principality and power.
   Colossians 1:27-28 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
   It is important to understand our perfection is only found in Jesus Christ. Apart from Him, we’re incomplete. In fact, those without Him will never experience what it means to feel whole. It is rather difficult to feel it when there is a God-sized hole in one’s heart. Our perfection is positional in nature. It cannot be obtained by our efforts. It must be received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

You Cannot Perfect Perfection

When a person tries to perfect perfection, if you will, he enters into the realm of pride, or operates out of pain. Perhaps, both. Pride is an obvious culprit, which was present at the Fall (see Genesis 3:1-7). Some fail to recognize their drive comes from wounds they suffered. It’s the compensation caper.
Sometimes, pride will team up with pain. How many people set out to prove they are not worthless to those who belittled them? Perhaps, they experienced rejection from a parent, because they did not perform up to his or her expectations. Maybe their peers never welcomed them into their inner circle, because they were considered losers for whatever reason. Pride will harness the power of the emotions, while pain will harness the power of pride to suppress those emotions.
   Even though some may have received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they have yet to embrace their new identity in Him. Thus, they try to create an identity made in the image of their imagination. In some cases, they try to do extra credit in order to be “good Christians.” Often, they become self-righteous.
   As a sidenote, it’s easy to feel resentment toward those who fall under the self-righteous category. Ironically, one might detour into self-righteousness themselves, as they find themselves judging those who judge others. Think about that one. That being said, perhaps, it would better to err on the side of compassion. Deep down, many of them suffering, need healing, but do not recognize it. Self-righteousness is all about feeling superior to others in order to mask the real them. Hello, hypocrisy!
   Basically, they fall in the works trap, which have no real value, even though others may benefit. It’s not based on love; it is based on approval from others. They want to be admired; therefore, it is inward focused. That’s an easy one to fall into. The question is, who are they actually seeking to glorify?
   1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing (NASB).
   Why do Christians seek glory, when they already have it in Jesus Christ. In fact, He actually gave His glory to those who belong to Him.
   Romans 8:30 Moreover whom He did predestinate, them he also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified.
   John 17:22 And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one.
   When a person works for it, seeking perfection on their terms, they fall from grace.
   Galatians 3:2-3 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
   Galatians 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

The World in Which We Live

Being judgmental is easy in the day and age in which we live. Which can make it more difficult to be merciful, and gracious towards others. It is interesting that many who advocate for tolerance are some of the least tolerant people on the planet. Their point of view basically says, “As long as you see things our way, you’re a good person.” May Heaven help you if you don’t!

The problem is they cannot see beyond their own point of view, which means they will not tolerate differing ones; much less, those who hold them. This is especially true of ideologues. Mirror time! If we’re honest with ourselves, how many of us would have to admit we lean in that direction to various degrees? The world in which we live teaches people to despise those of believe differently, or if you like, don’t believe at all.

Have you ever found yourself judging others, because they don’t believe, think or act the way you think they should? Are you quick to speak your mind, or even offer unsolicited advice to those who are not as “enlightened” as yourself? Are you able to freely share the Gospel, instead of condemning them out of hand? Do you have a heart that actually loves the “unlovable?” Which means you can see past their so-called flaws, and reach out to them. Hey Christian, isn’t that the call? Did Jesus ever say, “Only make disciples of lovable people?”

Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age (NASB).”

Empathy: Try to Understand

Proverbs 20:5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Part of walking a Spirit-filled life in which one is merciful, and gracious towards others is empathy. This is a big help if one struggles with judgment. Stepping back, and at least trying to see where others come from goes a long way. In many instances, we do not know what makes others tick.

We are unaware of how they grew up, and what they were taught in their formative years. We don’t know their life experiences, good or bad. All these things influence the way they believe, think and act. For instance, a person may decide he is an atheist, because he is angry at God. He blames God for something tragic that caused much pain. Atheism is his way to lash out at Him. It would be easy to write him off when he says to you, “I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in fairy tales!” Go deeper!

The focus here is not atheism; however, getting to the root cause of the problem may help in reconciling the individual to God in this example. There may be cases in which individuals live in self-destructive ways in order to fulfill a narrative they believe about themselves (i.e., “I’m not worthy of love, nor a better life.” “I’m evil,” and so on). Unfortunately, those behaviors impact others negatively.

How we interact with people may either strengthen their belief, or lessen it to a degree. It may even disrupt their core belief enough for them to consider another alternative. This calls for a spirit of meekness (gentleness). It requires humility, and above all, love!

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek (gentle): for they shall inherit the earth.  

Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Someone who is meek is one who exercises restraint. He more interested in the well-being of the other person, and chooses love over offence for their sake. “Don’t people have to take personal responsibility?” Sure, but know by and large, most are doing the best they can with what they have. Some need help. Truthfully, we all need help.

Galatians 6:1-5 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness (meekness); each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. For each one will bear his own load (NASB).

Self-Discovery

Have you ever felt misunderstood, and people take things wrong in spite of your best intentions? When dealing with other humans that is to be expected. Everyone has their own set of filters, and thus, see things differently. The temptation for some is to try to conform to how others think, which can cause personal conflict. Especially, if they don’t’ agree with everything others believe. Adding to the confusion is not being clear about their own values.

When a person does not know what makes himself tick, he may set out on a journey of self-discovery. Hoping to figure himself out, while trying to become his best version in the process. After a lengthy excursion, some find they are no closer to figuring things out than when they began.

The problem may rest in where they look for answers. That may come in various psychological explorations, to include books, therapy and the world of self-improvement. There are so many resources available, it can make your head spin. Then there’s that question of who do you trust? How many find themselves on a never-ending quest, because nothing has satisfied the itch, much less, filled the void?

Perhaps, they’re looking in the wrong places. That’s not to say there is nothing of value in some of these spaces, but human reasoning only goes so far. Leaning on your own understanding of things is not very helpful in getting to the desired destination. And that’s rub: do they even know what they desire? If so, is it the best one?

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

Look Upward; Not Inward

Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in His Own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.

It can be difficult to wrap your mind around the fact we are created in the image of God. That being the case, perhaps the journey of self-discovery should not be inward focused. By the way, some of the psychological, and self-help resources attempt to conform God into our image. That is one way to become severely confused. Frankly, it is demonic in some cases, and definitely flesh-driven in others. Certainly misguided!

Romans 8:29 For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Since we’re created in His image, it might be best to look upward instead of outward, or inward. Because humanity was corrupted by sin, it might be hard to believe we were created in His image; but we were. God had the solution to the problem before it all began. Which in a sense, placed the decision in our hands as to whether we conform to His image; or choose a different one to which to conform, so to speak. In the latter case, the void will never be filled!

Jesus cleansed us of our sins by His Own Blood, that we may conform to His image. How does one conform? Submit to Him. The more submitted you are to Him, the more you will be like Him. To be clear, every human being is still uniquely made, and has his or her own personality. Which means each of us has a unique relationship with God. Conforming to the image of Jesus is not about a personality change; rather, it is about being who He intended us to be, while allowing Him to manifest through us (i.e., the fruit of the Spirit as found in Galatians 5:22-23).

As long as a person pushes Him away, he will never know his true self, nor his full potential. Our full potential is found in Jesus, as we are complete in Him. A person will never feel complete, nor fulfilled apart from Him.

Romans 8:14-17 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.

It is far more satisfying, fun even, to discover who you are in Him. Let Him speak to your heart, and allow Him to reveal exactly who you are. After all, He’s the Designer. Let Holy Spirit reveal Who God is, who you are, and what the relationship should like through Scripture. The more you embrace your true identity, the more joy you will experience. You do not have to live in confusion. One thing is for certain, God understands you perfectly. Go to the Source!
