Introduction to the Basics

If a disciple of Jesus Christ is going to whether any storm, he or she needs a firm foundation on which to stand. Without that foundation, there is no stability. It’s important to grow deep roots, and it all begins with the basics. Some might be surprised what the Bible calls elementary principles.

Without those fundamental principles, it can prove difficult to grasp weightier things of the Word. Some things people consider to be deep teachings, actually fall under the elementary category.

Hebrews 5:12-14 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

There are Christians who have been saved for a long time, but still fall under the category of novice. They have not grown to maturity. Some is due to lack of discipleship. Whatever the reason, they haven’t grown. This series on the basics may challenge some, and we all should accept the challenge to grow, regardless of where we may fall on the maturity spectrum. To be absolutely frank: many of us need to get caught up, now more than ever. Truth is a prerequisite for the times in which we live!

I. n terms of the basics, we’ll start with Hebrews 6:1-3, and then expand from there.

What are the Basics?

Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles (elementary teachings) of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection (maturity); not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit.

This passage of Scripture lists five things that are considered elementary teaching: repentance from dead works; faith toward God; the doctrine of baptisms; the laying of hands; the resurrection of the dead, eternal judgment.

Instead of doing a cursory overview, let’s drill down in each one.

Basic #1: Repentance from Dead Works

What exactly does repentance mean? In the New Testament, it comes from the Greek word, METANOIA (Strong’s number: 3341), pronounced met-an’-oy-ah: afterthought (noun). Hence, a change of mind. Of course, the mind is where the faculty of moral reflection is located. This change of mind is always positive -from evil to good. It does not merely reflect agony of the mind, or regret. This word is derived from another, which involves regret: to repent, which is the verb counterpart.

What does is it mean to repent? Here’s the definition: METANOEŌ (Strong’s 3340), pronounced, met-an-o-eh’-o: to perceive afterwards. Hence, to change one’s mind and purpose, or to think differently. Again, this change is always for the better, and denotes a change of moral thought and contemplation. It involves regret and sorrow, accompanied by a true change toward God. It does include abhorrence or hatred of one’s past sins.

We can get a sense of this from 2 Corinthians 7:10: For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

In the Old Testament (Hebrew), to repent carries a little different meaning than the Greek. SHUWB (Strong’s 7725), pronounced, shoob, is a primary verb that means to turn back; hence, to turn away. It can, but does not necessarily mean return to the starting point. The basic idea of this word is turning back, or retracing one’s steps in order to turn to the right way.

It carries numerous renderings. One of which is turn, as found in 2 Chronicles 7:14. This is where some have defined repentance as a change of direction. You’re going one way, then you turn and go the opposite direction.

One major difference between the Greek and the Hebrew, is that in the Old Testament, it is pointed more toward a nation (Israel in most cases); whereas, the New Testament points to the individual.

Coming from the Latin side of the house, RESIPISCO, it means to recover one’s senses, or come to a right understanding.

To repent means to reform, or to have a genuine change of heart. It is important to emphasize that repentance goes beyond forsaking sin. To be clear, one of the reasons people have difficulty forsaking sin is because their view toward it hasn’t changed. The way you think greatly influences your behavior, which means repentance is not mere behavior modification. Notwithstanding, behavior does change as the result of repentance. Just because someone stops doing something, doesn’t mean the desire no longer exists. Can you say, “white knuckle?”

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

The word, convert, means to turn one’s self about, or turn back. In one sense, it means to turn to the worship of the true God. It also means to return, to bring back to the love and obedience of God. It is also rendered as turn.

1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for His Son from heaven, Whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

Jesus sent Paul to the Gentiles, “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith” (Acts 26:18).

That’s the definition of repentance and to repent. What are dead works? In short, they are religious acts not born of the Spirit and faith. They are sinful or carnal, and bear no fruit. It often refers to external rituals, in which is no life. Since they are not born of faith, they cannot please God. Part of repentance, is simply doing things God’s way, while forsaking the old carnal nature.

Dead works are based on unbelief, in which there is no peace. For some, the motivation is fear in the unhealthy sense. Repentance brings people to a place of rest, where they no longer self-reliant, or self-righteous for that matter. Anything outside of Jesus constitutes dead works.

Hebrews 4:9-11 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into His rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His.

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Introduction to the Basics

If a disciple of Jesus Christ is going to weather any storm, he or she needs a firm foundation on which to stand. Without that foundation, there is no stability.

Do You Agree With God’s Word?

What do you think: is it time believers get crystal clear about whether they believe the Word of God? Why the question? Because many say they believe the Bible and the proceeding Word, but their confession doesn’t seem to match. What they do and say often contradict His Word. This more than the occasional hypocritical moment. Why do you suppose that is?

One answer may be that their hearts are not totally converted. They haven’t made the commitment of no turning back, regardless of what they experience in life. They haven’t grown deep roots in the faith. In some cases, they’re dabbling. It’s more of a walk of convenience. When it comes down to it, they’re not totally sure about the Word. Another reason coincides with the previous, they are too wrapped up in the world to really care all that much. The Parable of the Sower really lays this out (Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 4:1-20; Luke 8:4-15).

Okay, these are obvious. What about those who have committed their lives to Jesus, and do believe the Word of God? This pertains to those who regularly read their Bible and pray. They are sincere. There may be something much more subtle going on here. In fact, they may not be conscious of an apparent conflict of interests.

Mixed Messages

There’s 90s song that asks a question: “Whose report will you believe?” It also gives an answer: “We will believe the report of the Lord!” Sound familiar? It’s a great question. This is where getting crystal clear is important. If you are hearing mixed messages, which message has more meaning to you? There are a lot of “wise” things said, but do they line up with Scripture? The wisdom of the world can sound enticing, until you compare it to God’s.

The irony is that God’s wisdom may sometimes sound backwards. A reason for this is it contradicts what some have believed their entire life. They tend to hang on to what they know, even if it’s wrong. There’s an element of certainty they feel from the familiar, and we all crave certainty.

Remember, comfort does not equal truth. In fact, some avoid truth, because it challenges them to make changes they don’t want to make -even for the better. If you believe in the Lord, believe Him and believe His Word.

This leads to another question: to whom or what are you listening, especially when things get tough? When things get crazy in the world, and we have seen a lot of crazy, some turn to the Word of God for comfort and direction. Conversely, some forget the Word and focus on the crazy. Not much comfort or wisdom there. They assume the worst, and completely forget God is still on the throne. It’s as if they believe darkness is greater than Light. There are numerous examples that could be given here, but we’ll have to forgo them for now.

If you want to keep your sanity, consult God, and focus on His Word.

How We Listen is a Big Deal: Do You Agree?

How We Listen is a Big Deal

Luke 8:18 So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him.

Jesus spoke these words in conjunction with The Parable of the Sower. Not only to what we listen affects our life, but the way in which we listen is a big factor. There are many things that could be said here, but let’s zero in on one. It is important to listen with a believing heart. A believing heart is intentional. It is one thing that will help you endure hardship. It also influences what you say.

Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

What one believes to be true will more often than not be what comes out of his or her mouth. There are some exceptions to this, such as capitulating to peer pressure.

Beware of Subtleties

It’s usually not the big overt things to get people off track; it’s the little things that add up over time. It could be something as simple as missing a word when reading or quoting Scripture. One word can change everything. This relates to a previous point, be careful about how you listen. If you’re not paying attention to what you’re reading or listening, you may find yourself believing, or receiving the wrong things.

When it comes to the Word of God it is important to be Berean. For those not familiar with this term, we find this concept in the book of Acts. The idea is to search the scriptures to see if a premise is true (read Acts 17:10-11). It is so important to compare what we believe and hear with the Bible, while asking God for wisdom and understanding.

Do Your Words Agree or Contradict His Word?

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Many quote this passage of Scripture when it comes to the words people speak, and yet, how many say things that aren’t exactly life-giving? As an exercise, pay attention to the things you say, and compare them with the Word. Do they line up? God’s Word is always life-giving and life-changing.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit Who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your Word is truth.

1 Peter 4:11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to Whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever.

Why is 2 Chronicles 7:14 (If My People) Often Quoted During a National Crises?

2 Chronicles 7:14 If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

How often have you seen this passage of Scripture appear on billboards, banners and lawn signs when there is some sort of national emergency? Perhaps, you’ve quoted it yourself. Why do people post and quote it? What is their commitment level? Are they seeking true repentance, or are they merely looking to be rescued?

Before going further, this is not intended to call anyone’s character into question. The idea is to connect to the heart of God, and come into alignment with His calling.

When talking about commitment level, this addresses a number of areas. Here’s one: are people thinking in terms of temporal earthly matters, or that of the Kingdom of God? Something to consider as we dive into this study.

Who are His People (If My People)?

This one may seem obvious, and it is, but if you are thinking from a national perspective, it may be easy to misapply this verse. It began with the nation of Israel, or the Jewish people in particular. Of course, it also applies to Christians, since we as Gentiles were grafted into the good Vine through Jesus Christ (Romans 11). However, not everyone who lived in Israel was Jewish, just as not everyone in a particular country is a Christian.

The call goes out to those who are His, in a nation. This gives us hope, in terms of seeing the land healed. That means it doesn’t require an entire nation humbling itself for changes to take place, just those who belong to Him. Of course, the more committed believers are to the Kingdom, the more a nation will be filled with disciples. At the same time, the Lord does bless His own, even if the rest of a nation is suffering hardship. We’ve also seen in the Bible where God has used His people to stave off catastrophe from happening to non-believing individuals and nations. In fact, they were blessed because the people of God were in their midst.

Now this is where it gets dicey. People talk about nations being judged, but what does the Lord say about judgment?

1 Peter 4:17-19 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? and if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner? Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

What affect does the Church have on nations? Think of it this way, only the disciples of Jesus Christ have power and authority over evil, not those of the world. What happens to a nation if His people were turn away from Him? Who is going to stand in the gap for that nation?

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace (reproach) to any people.

What Does Humble Themselves Mean?

Jesus said it best: “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24).

Humility means absolute surrender: both knees bowed completely, not just one. It means we stop insisting on having things our way. How many stop following Jesus when things don’t go their way? How many give God the cold shoulder when He doesn’t perform to their liking? Maybe they forget they’re bought with a Price, and they’re not their own (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 7:23). And yes, He’s God and they’re not! Be encouraged to study Matthew 16:24 in depth, and let it speak to your heart.

If we have truly humbled ourselves, wouldn’t the Body of Christ be undivided? Why are so many Christians attacking each other? When believers act in malice, publicly ridiculing those with whom they disagree, they play into the devil’s hands. There is a biblical way to address any differences we may have. Being a keyboard warrior on social media is not one of them. We are called to be one, and yes that means loving one another (read John 17:20-26). One sign of true repentance is love.

Ephesians 4:1-3 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

What Does It Mean to Pray?

This ties in with humility. Christianity 101 says, pray according to the will of our Father. Jesus revealed this to us in The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). Ask Him to show you what is His will as you pray. Submit to Holy Spirit, and let Him lead you. It can prove quite frustrating if one prays contrary to His will, which is why it is important to seek His wisdom first.

1 John 5:14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

What Does It Mean to Seek His Face?

If My People . . . Pray

There is a vast difference between seeking something from God and seeking His face. This is searching for Him, not getting something from Him. It means both to crave Him, and craving to worship Him. It’s a call to intimacy. When our thoughts and actions flow out love and relationship with Him, we do things out of purity. Seeking His face also means seeking to be in agreement with Him.

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a Rewarder of those who seek Him.

What Does He Mean by Turn From Their Wicked Ways?

I thought we were under grace? Am I not forgiven through Jesus Christ? Fair question. Has the Lord been dealing with you about an issue? What have you done about it? Has He asked you to stop doing something? Did you treat it as a command, or a suggestion? Maybe He’s been asking you to do something, like forgive someone. Have you done it? Are you doing things you know full well are contrary to His Word? Grace doesn’t give us the right to ignore what God is saying to us, much less sin.

How can anyone say they are a disciple of Jesus Christ when they know full well, they’re in rebellion. We’re not talking about struggling with something; we’re talking an absolute refusal to acquiesce to His desires. Are we willing to see or hear what He wants to reveal to us? By the way, this does affect prayer.

And Forgive Their Sins

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Heart Check is not for the Faint of Heart

This blog is going to be very direct, and yet, it’s intent is to offend no one; except the old man (nature), but then, he’s supposed to be crucified anyway. This is a call for examination of our own hearts. Yes, this includes the writer -me! Please, prayerfully consider what is being said. Allow Holy Spirit reveal what He desires to show you.

Heart Check Number 1: Deal With Your Own Hypocrisy

Like it or not, our own hypocrisy is holding us back from being who we need to be for God, and fulfilling our calling. The Church at large has lost untold influence due hypocrisy. It is very hard to listen to a hypocrite. Hypocrites spot other hypocrites quite easily, but they’re blind to their own duplicity. They are usually the first to criticize others. Ever been there?
Romans 2:1-2 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things (read all of chapter two).
Before going too far overboard, let’s define hypocrite. The word means to be an actor. One who pretends to be someone he or she is not. We can sincerely love the Lord, but still have hypocritical tendencies. This usually happens when we become self-righteous and lose touch with God’s mercy and grace. You know, the moments when we feel very critical or judgmental of others.
Probably, one of the bigger things we bump up against is holding others to a standard we can’t keep, or even try to maintain. This happens a lot when it comes to leaders of the Church, business, government and so on. Some ridicule others for their misbehavior, while privately practicing the same things.
And that leads to a question: how clean are we when we’re alone, out of sight of others? Are we doing things in secret that would be an embarrassment should they become public? If the latter is the case, how could we possibly ridicule another? That’s called hypocrisy!
Matthew 7:1-5 Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
We as the Church, the Body of Christ, need to be honest with ourselves. If we don’t deal with this issue, we will never influence the world for the Kingdom in a meaningful way. Have you ever asked the Lord how could things be such a hot mess? Have you ever considered it may be the result of us not being who we are meant to be?

Heart Check Number 2: Are We Willing To Change?

How many have something in which they’ve struggled for a very long time? Perhaps, it’s a pet sin, a pet hurt, anger, wrath and so on. Is it a real struggle, or do they say it is, so they feel better about not actually dealing with it? Similar to those who never intend change, but make a New Year’s Resolution in order to not look or feel bad. They may give it the old college try, but then fall flat in a matter of days. “No one ever keeps a resolution. Maybe next year.” They quit before they begin, because they aren’t serious about it.
To be clear, there are those who have had legitimate struggles of which they want to be free. For whatever reason, they haven’t experienced the victory, yet. To those of you who may fall in this category, know that God is faithful. He has the solution. He is your Healer, Deliverer and has already given you the victory, and it will manifest. Jesus is worthy for you to succeed!

Your victory will manifest

Humans fight against change, even when it’s for the better. Ironically, they fight against the changes of which they want to make; but they are so comfortable where they are, they don’t make the effort. No one wants to leave his or her nice, warm comfortable bed in the morning, even when they’re excited for the what the day has to offer. Have you ever looked forward to something, but when the morning came, you still wanted to roll over?
To experience the excitement that lays ahead, we have to get out of bed; otherwise, we will go to our graves with regret. Change is often uncomfortable, but it’s necessary for a truly meaningful life, which includes pleasing God. We are called to be conformed to the image of Jesus. For that to happen, it is necessary to submit to Holy Spirit and allow the Lord to do the work within us. Trust Him, He knows what He’s doing.
Ephesians 4:8-16 Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

What is Perfect Faith?

What is perfect faith? Is perfect faith available to us? If so, how do we obtain it, and what does walking by perfect faith look like? Here’s the short answer: perfect faith is the faith of Jesus. It’s God’s faith. And yes, it is available to all. As we prepare to jump into Scripture to answer these questions more thoroughly from a biblical perspective, relax! Walking by His faith is not about building your faith up to that level. You can’t work for it, much less, earn it.

What is Faith?

By definition, faith is assurance, firm persuasion, or conviction by inward certainty. The biblical meaning is found in Hebrews 11:1, Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. In short, faith is God’s unseen reality.

God has Faith

Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? This concept is not exactly new, but the fact He has faith, connects us to it by default. We are made in His image, which means God gave us the capacity live by faith. So, what does His faith look like?
Romans 4:16-17 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (As it is written, I have made you a father of many nations,) before Him Whom he believed, even God, Who quickens the dead, and calls those things which be not as though they were.
His faith calls things into existence. That’s something from nothing. We’re creative by nature, but we never actually create things from scratch. We form or mold things out of the things God created. Another aspect of His faith is found in Isaiah: Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure (Isaiah 46:9-10). His faith declares the ending from the beginning.
Here’s an important side note: as we already read, someone’s unbelief does not nullify God’s faith. And that means you do not require others to give you permission to walk by faith. Someone’s unbelief is not your problem, it’s theirs.

Jesus Walked by Faith

Acts 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a Man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know.
While on earth, Jesus gave us the Example of what walking by faith looks like. There are three positions which Jesus holds. These may not be all the positions, but knowing these three will help in getting a better understanding of Jesus being both God and Man, while bringing more clarity to the Trinity. They are as follows: Son of man, Son of God and God the Son. Briefly, as the Son of man, He represents humanity to God. As the Son of God He represents God to man. As God the Son, all things were created by Him and for Him (see Colossians 1:15-18).
As the Son of man, Jesus stands in as our peer. As our peer, He died on the Cross in our stead, and will also return to judge the world as the Son of man, not the Son of God (see John 5:26-27). On earth, as the Son of man, He has authority to forgive sin. He represents man to God and is also known as the Son of David, and the second Adam. Through Adam, sin and death entered into the world, and, by Jesus, justification unto life to those who receive Him. By the resurrection He is declared the Son of God (see Romans 1:4), by Whom we obtain the resurrection unto eternal life (John 5:21-25). He represents God to man, and extends His kingdom to the earth through the Holy Spirit. He is the Express Image of the Father, and all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and by Him all things exist because He is also God the Son.

Can We Walk by Perfect Faith?

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.
Notice this verse says, “I live by the faith of the Son of God.” That little word, of refers to the faith of Jesus. Once we were baptized into Jesus, and identified with His death and resurrection, our old selves were counted as dead. This means we no longer live by our faith, but His. Ephesians 3:12 In Whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him. Or: “Through His faith.” How is this possible?
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Born again in the Greek means to be born from above. This does not mean some sort of repetition or do-over. It’s a spiritual birth that makes us children of God.

Walking by Perfect Faith Requires Holy Spirit

Romans 8:14-18 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Briefly, walking by perfect faith is an act of submission. When you examine the fruit of the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22-23), the manifestation of Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 12:7-11), along with the Armor of God (see Ephesians 6:13-18), you will find that faith is a component of all of these. Which means faith comes from Holy Spirit, not our selves.

What Does Walking by Perfect Faith Look Like?

John 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do: for what things soever He does, these also doeth the Son likewise (see also John 12:49-50).
While on earth, Jesus did what He saw the Father do, and spoke what He said to speak. Jesus also said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). What does this point to? Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Not only does this verse refer to hearing the Gospel, it reveals how faith comes. In order to walk by faith, we need to hear from God and then speak and act according to what we hear.
John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. If His sheep hear His voice, then there is a voice to be heard! How do we hear His voice? Luke said something very interesting, which gives us a clue.
Acts 1:1-2 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which He was taken up, after that He through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom He had chosen.
Notice, after the Ascension, Jesus gave commandments to the apostles through Holy Spirit. If you read the entire book of Acts, you will this principle in action.
Because we have Holy Spirit living in us, we are able to hear what Jesus has to say. Some wonder if they can even hear God. Don’t panic! For starters, God is a Respecter of none, and that means every believer has been given the capacity to hear. “But I haven’t heard His voice.” Are you sure? Have you ever felt an inner nudge to do or say something? Maybe you had one of those out of nowhere thoughts come to mind. A sudden solution to a problem, and so on. Have you ever had a check in the spirit? These are all part of hearing.
1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Anointing means endowment or ability, and is also rendered as “unction” (as found in verse 20). In it, we find those “inclinations,” or discernment. For example, that “gut feeling” that lets you know something isn’t quite right about someone or something. Just as you may experience, “that’s right,” when you hear something taught for the first time; or conversely, “something is off.” That’s all part of hearing. The bottom line, it’s something beyond yourself.
Here’s a suggestion: sit quietly with a notebook and pen. Listen, and write down what you feel the Lord might be saying to you. See if it provides clarity or direction. Date the entry, and read it after some time has passed. Then compare what you wrote to moment in which you find yourself. See if circumstances or events reflect what was written. You may find more clarity about what you wrote later in the game. It’s a great way to train your ears.
If you feel like nothing is happening, be patient. Sometimes, it helps to worship or get into His Word for a while. This can calm any clutter that might be distracting you. The main thing is connection, which means seeking Him instead of the experience. When you connect to God, you will have experiences unlike any other.
In a nutshell, walking by perfect faith looks like communion or fellowship with God. As we connect with Him, we find dialogue taking place. That means listening as well as speaking. It’s all about relationship. Because He loves you and desires that relationship with you, perfect faith is available to you!
