When it comes to any principle in the Bible, it’s important to pay attention to what God actually has to say about it. Great care must be exercised in our studies, so we don’t put words into His mouth so to speak. We can ill afford to add to or take away anything from His Word. As we continue to focus on the deity of Jesus, we’ll look at what He and the Father has to say about it, along with Old Testament passages of Scripture. Be encouraged to study this out for yourself, and allow Him to reveal Himself to you in a way He desires.
Hebrews 1:1-6 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”? But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.”
Notice verse two says, “Through Whom He made the worlds,” underscoring Jesus as taking part in creation. “Express image” means the exact image. While the word, “Person” is also rendered as “Substance” in Hebrews 11:1, which means what really exists under any appearance or reality, making it the essential nature. Therefore, Jesus is the Perfect Expression of God’s Divine Essence or Nature. Colossians 2:8-9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, Who is the Head of all principality and power. Jumping to Hebrews 1:6, God the Father says, “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” Question: what does He say about worshipping other gods? A god is someone a person worships instead of God, Himself; whereas, an idol is an object that is worshipped as a god. Look at Exodus 20:3-5 and Exodus 34:14 to name just a couple out of many passages of Scripture that forbid such practices. If Jesus was not part of the Trinity, do you suppose He still would command angels to worship Him?
John 20:27-29 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Did Jesus correct Thomas when he called HIm my Lord and my God? We can pay attention to what is not said or done at times. Again, with great caution! In this case, wouldn’t Jesus correct Thomas if he was in error? How about something more straight forward? John 8:56-59 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. “I AM is a very clear statement of His Deity which goes back to Exodus 3:14: And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” There are more things Jesus said, but at this juncture we’ll touch on one more thing. Again, dig for yourself.
Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
It is interesting that His Name would be called Mighty God and Everlasting Father. Have your ever noticed in the gospels that when Jesus ministered to people, He would at times call some one “Daughter” or “Son” (see Matthew 9:2, 22)? To be clear, this is not saying Jesus is the Father; but they are One. Another lesson for another time. But, we’ll close with this:
And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: “I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. “O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. “And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:22-26).
