In Essence, What is Progressive Christianity

Upon examining the beliefs of progressive Christianity, or perhaps better stated its lack, it comes down to this: it is man attempting to create God in his own image. Moreover, it is not Christianity at all. Basically, those of this movement are saying, “We are God and He is not.”

To be clear, no one here is persecuting those who claim this religion. What they believe and do is ultimately between them and God, as we will all stand before Him and give an account. If anything, pray for their repentance, because it would be far better for them to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” versus the alternative. There is only one Judge and we aren’t Him.

Beware of False Gospels

Galatians 1:6-9 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

This passage amongst others, serves as a stark warning about those who would pervert the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Adding to, or taking away anything from the Word of God is a dangerous endeavor. God says what He means and means what He says. There is only one Truth, and He is the Determiner of it. Would it not be far better to search out His truth in the way He intended us to know it, than theorize what He meant?

Holy Spirit clearly laid out the Gospel through various scribes (writers), such as Paul. It is critical to understand Holy Spirit is the Author Who declared the Word of God through those anointed with the task of writing. For example, Paul may have penned Galatians, but Holy Spirit authored it. Paul wrote under Holy Spirit’s inspiration.

2 Peter 1:19-21 We have also a more sure Word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Private interpretation of Scripture and prophecy will get you in trouble, especially if you have an agenda of your own. We must rely on Holy Spirit to instruct us, which means we don’t blindly follow people. It is important to study to see if what is said by others is true, but finding truth requires integrity. Meaning, there must be a sincere desire to know it as God intended; otherwise, it’s a sham.

Itching Ears

To be honest, being a disciple of Jesus Christ is not convenient. What God says to us may seem rather harsh at times; but rest assured, everything He says and does for us is based on His love. He has our best interests at heart. Never forget, He knows exactly what is best for everyone, and He calls everyone to repentance for their own good. By the way, holiness is a requirement to enter into the Kingdom (see Hebrews 12:14 amongst others).

We all want to see our loved ones make it to Heaven, but that entrance can only be accomplished God’s way. He is God and we are not. Is it truly love to celebrate any kind of lifestyle that leads to destruction? Is it love to encourage people to continue in falsehood and confusion, calling it acceptance. Those separated from God do not know their true identity, which means a life lived apart from Him is a life of confusion. Frankly, that’s no life at all.

As Christians, we are called to love people unconditionally; however, that does not mean we are to embrace something in which they partake that is destroying them. Confused people tend to be self-destructive. At the same time, we cannot judge them. God judges those outside the Church, which means we can ill afford to get sucked into self-righteousness because they don’t behave themselves “properly.” After all, none of us deserved His mercy.

By and large, many want their cake and eat it too. They want the benefits God has to offer, but they’re unwilling to receive them His way. They feel entitled to His blessings, regardless of lifestyle. Ironically, they believe doing things their way will make them happy. Unbeknownst to them, their best life is found by doing things His way. There is nothing progressive about progressive Christianity.

2 Timothy 4:1-5 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, Who shall judge the quick and the dead at His appearing and His Kingdom; Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
